The quality of our lives, our productivity , as well as the development of a country greatly depend on our ability to produce new knowledge, and to develop and harvest the scientific and technological innovations. Informatics and particularly the scientific disciplines related to data management are expected to keep playing a central role towards achieving this goal. For decades now, Greek scientists have made important contributions in these fields, continuously and actively participating at the most competitive related international scientific fora. Since 2002, the Greek scientists that are active in the field of Data Management have established their own scientific forum, the Hellenic Data Management Symposium (HDMS).

The 1st HDMS took place in Athens, on July 2002. According to tradition, the 2nd, 3rd and 4th HDMS were lively participated and successfully held in Athens on 4-5 September 2003, 28-29 June 2004 and 25-26 August 2005 respectively. The 5th HDMS will be held in Thessaloniki on 7-8 September 2006.
